The Horse Trust criticises 'rescue' of foreign slaughter horses

The Horse Trust has criticised the growing trend of European horses destined for slaughter being purchased and imported to the UK.

A number of people have recently spoken to the charity, after having rescued horses from the meat trade in France. Several people who have purchased these horses have struggled to look after them as many of the horses have behavioural problems and other medical issues.

The Horse Trust has asking people to stop purchasing horses from the many websites which allow people to buy horses destined for slaughter. They suggest horse-lovers should perhaps focus on re-homing a UK horse instead.

Paul Jepson, chief executive of The Horse Trust said: "These websites are profit-making ventures and by buying these horses people are encouraging the horse-meat trade. You may be saving one horse, but your money will fund the breeding of many more horses for the horse-meat trade."
